How can Giddy Goanna’s products be used to improve Workplace Health and Safety?
Giddy’s Books Lead to Improved Safety Records at Work.
Step 1
As part of their WHP&S program, the organisation purchases Giddy’s books for each of their employees children (under 10 yrs). It may be given out at an employee education session or at a social event (such as a Christmas party). Alternatively, instead of simply purchasing the books, an organisation could sponsor one/some of Giddy’s new books, and subsequently receive a large quantity of these books to distribute.
Step 2
Families and children think positively of the organisation for giving the children a book they love and is good for them.
Step 3
Children read the Giddy books regularly, often involving the parents in ‘doing’ the book’s puzzles.
Step 4
Parents find Giddy a good ‘tool’ to get their children to do the safe things (helmets, seat-belts, sunscreen…).
Step 5
Children’s safety behaviours are improved and children are aware of the correct safety behaviours of adults from Giddy’s books (ear-muffs, safety glasses, sunscreen, spray masks…).
Step 6
Children become a powerful tool in improving the safety behaviours of their parents (particularly effective with improving the safety behaviours of Dads, where most other techniques fail).
Step 7
Parent’s safety behaviours improved at home

What Theory is this based on?
When people think safety at home, they think safety at work. People are more likely to change their safety behaviours at home first, because they innately care for their children. Thinking safety then becomes natural. Giddy has already had outstanding success in changing the safety behaviours of Dad’s on farms (such as wearing earmuffs, safety glasses, chemical gear…)
Improving Farm Safety Is Very Difficult. How Can Giddy Goanna Help?
• By educating the children, it is a very effective means of getting the safety messages to stoic farmers. Most farmers know want they should be doing in regard to safety, but don’t bother for a number of reasons. When questioned by their children or grandchildren about why they aren’t doing the proper/safe things, they generally implement the safe practices.
• Giddy’s books are "just a children’s book" and are not seen as an intimidating way of getting the safety messages into a farming household.
• Where adult literacy is an issue, Giddy’s books have proven ideal. Even adults with literacy problems are generally happy to sit and read a children’s book with their child / grandchild. Giddy’s books use minimalist, simplistic, everyday language and are largely based on their illustrations.
Yet they effectively educate people about child and adult safety.
• Farming is often a occupation and lifestyle that is often passed down through the generations. By educating the children, who will often go on to be farmers, the next generation has a much better attitude towards safety. It will be natural for them to work safely.
